The Butler Gallery is one of the most vibrant contemporary art spaces in Ireland outside of Dublin. Located in the heart of medieval Kilkenny City, in the former kitchens of Kilkenny Castle, the gallery was founded by George Pennefeather in 1943 and named in honour of Peggy and Hubert Butler. The Gallery is unique in both Kilkenny and Ireland for presenting people with a collection of works by Irish and International Artists dating back to the 18th century. New collections and piece are continuously being added to the gallery to further develop the culture of art in Kilkenny.

Butler Gallery is the perfect representation for what enthusiastic commitment to the arts can achieve, actively engages in promoting the value of the arts to society through cultivating a diverse programme of contemporary exhibitions and events for adults, children and all sorts of audiences. The Society and groups behind Butler Gallery continuously engage and invigorate the area with activities to demonstrate and reflect the continuous changes taking place in the nature of visual art.

‘Really close to center town’

“My wife and I stayed here 1 night but we really enjoyed our stay both in the hotel and in the city of Kilkenny. The hotel was close to the Butler Gallery and was a block from the main street which was full of little shops and pubs! Easy walking distance.”

‘Very convenient and central in Kilkenny’

“Stayed for three nights (room only). We had a lovely room, very quiet as requested and it was a very good sized room. We were attending the Kilkenny Arts festival as my daughter was performing. This hotel is right in the heart of downtown Kilkenny and everything is within walking distance. The Black Abbey, St. Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny Castle, the Butler Gallery and gardens, etc, were all within 5 minutes walk.”
