Kilkenny Castle was built in the early part of the 13th Century for the 4th Earl of Pembroke. It is located in the centre of Kilkenny City, in an area known as “High Town” and looks over the River Nore which runs through the city. It was home ot the powerful Butler Family for over 600 years.
Over the years the castle has been enhanced and reflects its 800 years of existence with a selection of architectural styles. It is managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW) and is open to visitors from 9.30 to 4.30 from October to February and from 9.30 to 5.00 for March and from April to August is open until 5.30.
