A few highlights of this year's festival include:
Based on the famous Greek myth, Richard Strauss’ Elektra is an opera steeped in derangement and blood lust about a family of killers living out the consequences of a divine curse. With searing vocal lines and fiery orchestration, Strauss pushes the boundaries of his art to depict a world of psychological torment where the border between ecstasy and madness is starting to dissolve.
The Castle Yard forms a magnificent setting for Irish National Opera’s fully staged performance, directed by Conall Morrison and starring acclaimed soprano Giselle Allen in the title role.

2047. Global civilization is one false move away from extinction. Following a major bust-up amongst world superpowers, society is in the midst of a global doomsday event. Hope for a return to the halcyon days of the 2020s comes in the form of an incredible new tonic, 'The Preventive', which claims to immunise those who drink it against the harmful effects of recent biochemical warfare.
Charged with distributing this miracle elixir are the notorious Calibri Triplet Family Band, fronted by the deftly charismatic Cal Calibri, and famous for their soaring harmonies, relentless regional touring, and that one regrettable Japanese cat food commercial. Mainly the harmonies, though.
Over the course of an exhilarating trademark Calibri Family performance, you are invited to do what any reasonable person would do in the face of catastrophe and place your life in the hands of a three-piece folk band. Their message is simple: everyone must drink the tonic for it to be effective. There can be no exceptions.
Tonic is a spectacular new medicine show infused with a wild, genre-spanning live score and staged with dystopian panache. It’s the show that has everything you need to get over a life-altering cataclysm. Join the Calibri Triplet Family Band for the 'first gig after the apocalypse'. Your survival depends on it.
