Hotel Near Black Abbey Kilkenny

Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel is a 3 minute drive or a 9 minute walk to Black Abbey Kilkenny

Established outside the founding walls of Kilkenny City in 1225, The Black Abbey was one of the first houses of the Dominican Order in Ireland. Originally built in a typical Dominican style, little remains of the early church physically but it’s impact in the city from the 14th Century to present day has been astronomical.

Named after the black cloaks worn by the “Black Friars” over their white habits, The Black Abbey played a pivotal role in city life. During the 1920’s, the town of Kilkenny was divided in half with one part occupied primarily by indigenous Irish people and the other half occupied by English settlers. The abbey was built between this divide with the purpose being of demonstrating its independence from either side. The Black Abbey was at the Centre of Life in Kilkenny for centuries until King Henry VIII confiscated it and converted it into a courthouse. Throughout years of being unoccupied, the Black Abbey was left in ruin until the Dominican Order regained possession in the 19th Century, restoring and opening the Abbey to become a place for public worship once again.

The Black Abbey remains open to this day as a site of public worship in the medieval town of Kilkenny. One of the most significant features of this building is its stunning “Rosary Window”, created in 1892, it is considered to be the largest stained glass window in Ireland with its colours radiating in the sunlight. Tourists travel from near and far to view the remains of the original Abbey, such as the nave and transept, as well as to marvel upon the 15th Century alabaster statue of the Holy Trinity found hidden in the walls of the Abbey.
